The Electric Shadows Podcast reaches its 40th episode. What better way to mark this landmark episode than by discussing the biggest night in the movie calendar: the Academy Awards, better known as the Oscars. Best known as the awards where they announced the wrong movie last year for the biggest win of the night.
We know what you’re thinking, “Aren’t the Oscars just fish-wrapping by the Wednesday after the Sunday they happen?” Highly probable, but fear not. In a discursive, some might almost say wildly undisciplined chat, the two Rob’s hold forth on a range of subjects spinning off from the award winners. Including 1994’s The Shadow, the tyranny of pan and scan video in the dark days before DVD, and an imagined disaster in which Warren Beatty uses Faye Dunaway as a human shield.
Plus of course, the #MeToo and #TimesUp elements of the evening, and the house cleaning Hollywood’s been doing since the Weinstein revelations.
And Gary Oldman winning Best Actor for Darkest Hour. We love Gary, not so much Darkest Hour…
There’s also room made to bemoan the fact that War for the Planet of the Apes was passed over in favour of Blade Runner 2049. Meaning not one film from the new Apes trilogy was recognised for their pioneering FX work.
Plus, as an added bonus included below is the Lonely Island’s submission for an Oscar song, Why Not Me. It may have been “financially and logistically impossible”, but it would have also been the best moment of the evening.
So, that was the 90th Academy Awards that was. Thanks as always for listening. See you in episode 41!
